Starship Technologies Rolls Out Autonomous Food Delivery Robots at University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus has become the latest site to introduce food delivery via autonomous robots, as Starship Technologies deploys its fleet to serve students, faculty, and staff. The robots can deliver orders from popular eateries housed within Coffman Memorial Union, including Starbucks, Panda Express, and Erbert & Gerbert’s
How the Service Works
The delivery process is fully automated. Customers can place their orders through Starship’s mobile app, selecting a nearby drop-off point on the university’s East Bank. The app also provides real-time GPS tracking, allowing users to monitor the robot’s journey from pick-up to delivery. Once the robot arrives, the recipient unlocks the secure storage compartment through the app to retrieve their meal
Convenient and Sustainable Delivery
Starship’s zero-emission robots offer a sustainable alternative to vehicle-based deliveries. Operating in all weather conditions, they are well-suited to the harsh Minnesota winters, ensuring reliable service year-round. Each delivery costs $2.49 plus a 10% fee, making it both affordable and efficient for the university community.
Enhanced Security and Anti-Theft Measures
Designed with security in mind, the robots are equipped with GPS tracking accurate to the nearest inch. They also feature alarms to deter tampering or theft attempts. If tipped or disturbed, the robots emit a loud noise to attract attention, ensuring the safety and integrity of the delivery system
Part of a Growing Trend
The University of Minnesota joins other institutions—such as Cal Poly, Southeast Missouri State University, and Prairie View A&M—in adopting Starship’s delivery solution. The initiative not only saves time for busy students but also supports accessibility by providing easy food access to individuals with mobility challenges.
This deployment marks a significant step forward for automated services on campus, reflecting a broader trend toward autonomous, sustainable solutions across educational institutions.
