Swisslog Healthcare, a leading supplier of pharmacy and transport automation solutions, has launched a Postdoctoral Pharmacy Fellowship Program to prepare the next generation of pharmacy leaders for careers at the intersection of healthcare technology, medication safety, and innovation. The inaugural fellowship begins in July 2027, with applications now being accepted through Nov. 20, 2026.

The one-year program develops competencies through a combination of structured rotations, strategic projects, mentorship, and external engagement opportunities. Participants gain firsthand experience supporting the scientific, clinical, and operational advancement of medication management technologies used by hospitals and health systems worldwide.

Why This Matters to the Industry
American hospital pharmacies face a deepening workforce crisis. Pharmacists are retiring faster than universities can replace them, and pharmacy school enrollments continue to decline. Hospital pharmacy has raised expectations for entry-level professionals, with an additional two-year voluntary residency now expected after graduation. That bar has risen faster than the educational pipeline can respond. Swisslog Healthcare created this fellowship to directly address that gap, offering early-career pharmacists a meaningful path into healthcare technology and industry leadership where automation serves as a critical tool for workforce support.

Leadership Perspective
"We have been supporting students of pharmacy for over 10 years through our Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential program with several leading Schools of Pharmacy," said Michael Palone, Pharmacy Affairs Executive, Swisslog Healthcare. "The creation of this distinctive fellowship program demonstrates our commitment to developing the next generation of pharmacy leaders. We have learned from our work with students that early career professionals bring energy and passion that is hard to beat."

Program Overview
The fellowship targets pharmacists seeking careers in healthcare technology, medical and pharmacy affairs, product strategy, business development, clinical consulting, or healthcare leadership. Informational sessions on this unique industry fellowship will be offered, and more information on the program and these events can be found at  https://www.swisslog-healthcare.com/en-us/careers/pharmacy-fellowship

Swisslog Healthcare's fellowship builds on more than a decade of industry-education collaboration. Through its Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential program with several leading Schools of Pharmacy, the company has provided students with hands-on exposure to the pharmacy automation industry, giving this new fellowship a proven and tested foundation from which to grow.

Advancing the Pharmacy Profession
"There are many excellent fellowship programs, but we see this program as unique because it offers an opportunity to immerse fellows in all aspects of technology, automation, and real-world solutions to the problems pharmacies face every day," added Palone. “Many of our customers support educational programs for students and residents, and we are excited to be contributing to the future of pharmacy in this way.”

Swisslog Healthcare's fellowship reflects the company's broader commitment to strengthening the pharmacy workforce from the ground up. As automation continues to reshape hospital operations worldwide, the program positions early-career pharmacists to lead that transformation, bringing fresh perspectives and specialized knowledge to the industry's most pressing challenges.
